Wow, NY, what can I say! Right, so even before I came here I wasn’t sure what I felt about it. I was obviously super excited to see my friend after almost 3 years but NY reminded me of London, a busy busy city, and I wasn’t sure I was ready for the madness. But I put that out of my mind, packed my bag and left for NY.
My friend picked me up from the Port Authority Bus Terminal around 5pm and I was really tired after the 5hr bus journey from Boston so we decided not to stop anywhere and head straight home. As I left the station I noticed a few things; there were SO many buildings, so many people and it was SO F.R.E.A.K.I.N.G cold and windy! Literally, 5seconds after we started walking I changed my mind about going home and decided I needed some shelter. We quickly went into Starbucks to get my new favourite Chestnut and Praline latte. I took a few sips and tried to get mentally prepared to for the wind outside. We then made a run for the subway station, which was may be 20 steps away. So, quick train ride to Queens, a harrowing 10minute walk in the cold and we were home! Took a hot mug of green tea and the heater on full blast to start feeling my toes again.
After having a chat with my friend and his girlfriend (whom I was meeting for the first time) we went to a Cuban restaurant for dinner (I was hungry but my mind was like “oh my god, I have to walk in the wind again!!”) but the dinner more than made up for the weather. There was so much delicious food (sorry, no pictures). We ate prawn fritters, veggie fritters, chicken wings and beef empanada for starters, then salmon salad, beef steak, rice and beans for mains. After eating all this, or may be it was sometime after the starters, I realized I was beginning to get full up. But there was some mention of my friend’s favourite bakery (called Martha’s) and the cheesecake there and all thought of being full was out of my mind. At the bakery I got the Oreo Cheesecake which was absolutely fab. We shared the cake and we still couldnt finish it, it was that big a slice. I had passed the point of being “comfortably full”. After reaching home I was in food coma for a while plus I was super tired from my journey which meant that sleep wouldn’t come easily at night. After tossing and turning for an hour or so and in the middle of all the NY noises I finally fell asleep. One of my last thoughts that night was that I will skip pancakes for breakfast the next day (which was the plan I had made with my friend).
